What is Metabolic Testing?
The resting metabolic rate is the energy (calories) that it takes for your body to perform all of its chemical reactions while you are at rest. This includes activities like breathing, circulation, kidney function, and breakdown of sugars and fats for energy. This comprises about 75% of the energy you use. The other 25 % of energy is used for digestion and daily activities.
Is it the same thing as a thyroid test?
No. Thyroid is one of the many factors that affect resting metabolic rate, so in a sense it is more comprehensive than a thyroid test. It does not replace thyroid testing. That can be done separately.
How is it measured?
By breathing into a machine for up to 10 minutes, the machine can measure your oxygen use and determine how much energy your body uses at rest. Your 24 hour calorie requirement can be measured and compared to other people your age, sex, and weight to determine if your metabolism is relatively slow or fast.
Who should have metabolic testing?
Any patient struggling with their weight is a candidate for testing.
How much does it cost?
Insurance can usually be billed for the procedure. For cash paying patients the cost is $50.
It is preferable that you not eat or exercise for 3-4 hours prior to the test, as these activities increase metabolic rate. Restriction of caffeine for several hours is also preferable.
